2016 Spring Newsletter

The Friends held a very successful event on Sunday, March 6 at the Lois Hole Library.  We were thrilled to have Mike Jenkins a Biological Scientist Technician with the City of Edmonton give a fascinating talk on good bugs to have in your garden and how to attract them.  I think most attendees had no idea that there were so many small but helpful bugs around us that we can’t even see.  The FOG Board members enjoyed meeting all the members and guests that came to the talk.  After the presentation, members enjoyed the raffle with many lovely plants, fresh eggs and gardening books so generously donated by Ieuan Evans and Karen Olivier.  Thanks for all that attended and hope to see more of you at the next FOG event.

The FOG board is busily planning the next events for the upcoming season.  We are pleased to announce that on Sunday, May 29th Dr. Bruce Dancik will be taking us on a tour of the beautiful Alpine Garden at DBG.  Save this date as you won’t want to miss it.

We are also planning three more events for this season.  Stay tuned for all the details.  We are always looking for guest speakers who would like to take a group through the garden or any other ideas for FOG meets ups are always appreciated.

Compost cartoonCOMPOST SALE

The FOG Board is currently organizing the FOG annual compost sale.  This takes place at the DBG on the first day of the DBG Plant Sale which is May 14th this year.  Come out and purchase some fresh compost and save $5 on plants with your FOG membership.  If anyone would like to help bag the compost please let us know at info@friends-devonianbotanicgarden.org.

Please join us on Sunday, April 17th at 1pm in the Ikoi no ba pavilion in the Japanese garden at DBG.  This is a great opportunity for FOG members to see the newest building funded by the Friends through many generous donations and grants.  After the business meeting which will feature highlights of 2015 and the appointing of the FOG executive and board members, there will be a timely presentation by Azim Jeraj about the uniqueness of an Islamic Garden.  You won’t want to miss this informative talk.  A raffle and refreshments will follow the meeting

The Crafters are still very much involved with raising funds through crafting to help finance programs at the Gardens. We actively support financially the Green School program on an ongoing basis and last year were able with the help of a matching government grant to pay again for two new trams. More visitors, and in particular physically challenged ones, can now safely ride and enjoy in comfort the sights all the Gardens have to offer.

While our membership is slowly dwindling due to age and health reasons, we still keep at it and will be taking part on Father’s Day with staging our Rhubarb Fest, will have our sales room open on many weekends during the summer, will make and donate fresh floral arrangements for the El Fresco Opera night and support the Luminaria.

Our AGM will be held this year on May 5th at 10:00am in our sales room downstairs with a potluck luncheon to follow at noon. We like to extend an invitation to all FOG members to join us if you can. Please let our president, Jean Maffret, know if you are able to attend. Her e-mail address is: ljpmaffret@shaw.ca, or call her at 780 467 2157 after April 30.

Please call Dana at 780-221-6467 if your FOG membership is overdue for renewal or if you would like to make a tax deductible gift to the Friends.  FOG memberships make awesome Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and any occasion gifts!

The Friends of the Garden Board hope to see you out at the DBG this season!

Greatest gift
